Double Page Spread Examples

Before starting to design and create my magazine, I had a small idea of what I wanted my double page spread to look like. There are a few examples below which represent what I want my magazine to look like. My main idea was to have I focused on a specific celebrity, or in this case, a musician. There would be an interview on the said artist which will be on one side of the page, as the other side will include an image of them. The musician will not be someone famous as there are copyright issues involved, yet I will try to make my article look as realistic as possible. I think I will take a few ideas from these double page spreads, but only ideas as a whole. For example, having the image large on one of the pages to attract audiences when they flip through the magazine. Also, I will use an interview style similar to the layout that was used in the magazine with Robert Pattinson.

On this magazine double page spread, the band The Vaccines is your typical rock band which they do look like on this page to the left. On this issue, they did an interview mixed with an article. By doing this, they cover two different preferences that the readers could possibly once. Even though this isn't a typical interview, I liked how there is one quote which stands out from the rest of the text. The image also takes over a larger proportion of the page up which makes it the main focus of the page. It also lets the readers know that the band was informed of the magazine page, and they actually had an input. As well as this, it attracts an audience towards the magazine if a well-known group is involved. I think the features that I would use from this double page spread are the use of one quote which stands out from the rest. I like how it attracts someone to that page without giving away too much information. It allows people to have a sneak preview of what content is going to be throughout the interview. Also, the largest quote tends to be the main answer or the biggest news.

In this article on the double page spread, the main feature is that it is an interview taking place. You can easily tell by how the layout is set out and the large quote from it at the top of the page. This stood out to me the most out of all of these magazines. I liked how the interview questions are displayed on the page with the image next to it. The text isn't all pushed together in one box, it is displayed out question by question so you can see them separately. The image takes up a whole page which allows people to see it straight away if the flip through the magazine. It attracts people in a different way than just having a small picture. This article also includes smaller images on the left hand side of the page, they relate to the questions and answers in the interview. When I create my own magazine, I want to have a similar layout idea. I want it to be easily noticeable that there is an interview on this page. The questions are in bold which makes it easier for people to notice it that way. I also like how before the interview is even displayed, there is a small paragraph beforehand. This can include an overview of the interview, information on what the questions are about, or many other things.

Q magazine tend to have a lot of their layouts on various pages in a resembling way. They tend to have a lot of monochrome with their basic features and then add a small amount of colour to specific areas. In this particular issue, they have done something quite common on double pages, which are having the celebrity/model on a full page of their own. This attracts readers as they flip through the magazine, likewise to what other magazines seem to do. Although, this magazine stands out from the rest. I like how on this issue, and previous ones, Q use letter initials over text which brings the whole look together. They make it slightly transparent so you can still see the text through it, yet it is still clear and vibrant. The image also fits perfectly below the main bulk of the text which gives the layout a cleaner cut look. Everything fits in its own place on the page, and as a result of this, more text or images can be added to possible gaps. I used this double page spread to get inspiration, and I have a clear idea of what possible features I could use. I like how everything has its place by having a lot of things going on, yet it isn't over-powering. The contrast between the three colours; black, white and red, really stand out from each other. These colours were chosen for their pages as it is Q magazine's house style.

In this article, the main focus is the large image on the far right hand side. It takes up a big percentage of the page and therefore becomes the main attraction that people are most likely to see first. As the image takes up a lot of the double page spread, there isn't much room for much text. Another reason why there isn't a lot of room for text is because the artist's name takes up half the left hand page. The whole colour scheme for this article is monochrome, and even the image takes this feature into consideration. I like how large the image is as if you flip through the pages, the image will be the first thing you see. Although, there isn't much text added which doesn't give as much information to the readers. There are only three small paragraphs on the bottom of the left hand page which don't offer that much information. I would use similar features from this magazine, one of them being the simple house style they used in this article.
